Interconnected and Collaborative
The Center works with local and indigenous community groups, government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, researchers and other stakeholders to identify and address conservation priorities based on regional socio-environmental realities. Our goal is the protection of biodiversity and healthy coastal and marine ecosystems that in turn nurture the economies and cultures of the local and indigenous communities of the region. The Center’s programs work in an interconnected manner to address the cumulative impacts of development, overfishing, ineffective regulation and climate change by working collaboratively to create strategies based on good science, community needs, education, training and diffusion. Our Programs
We conduct and support long-term research and monitoring in order to increase biological knowledge about the region.
We train community leaders with a deep sense of place, and the knowledge, motivation and skills to be agents of change in their communities.
The WCP works closely with fishermen and community members to promote locally-based conservation of estuaries.
Each year, the Center supports 10-15 projects involving ~150 local and indigenous community members.
The Center’s Indigenous Community Partnership Program (ICPP) connects research and conservation in the region with the Comcaac (Seri).
Our program contributes to the protection of priority species and habitats by connecting people with information – and with each other.
